Jamshedpur lady constable commits suicide over financial stress

Jamshedpur: In a heartbreaking incident, the adverse financial condition of a 45-year-old lady police constable, identified as Lalita Kumari, drove her to commit suicide by jumping from a four-storey residential building in Golmuri on Friday morning. The tragic event unfolded on the premises of Golmuri Police Line, sending shockwaves through the community of fellow police personnel residing in the area.

Lalita Kumari, the sole breadwinner for her family of five, including her husband and three school-going children, succumbed to fatal injuries sustained from the fall. Neighbours rushed her to Tata Main Hospital, where emergency duty doctors pronounced her dead.

The untimely demise of Lalita Kumari has left the community in disbelief and sorrow. According to police reports, financial woes, exacerbated by her husband’s unemployment and alcohol addiction, pushed Lalita into a state of constant stress. The burden of running the household fell solely on her shoulders.

Relatives revealed that the tipping point might have been a demand from one of her sons for an iPhone, adding to her already unbearable tension. A serious quarrel between Lalita and her husband further escalated the family’s domestic challenges.

A concerned neighbour expressed, “Lalita Kumari would run the family, but as the husband was unemployed, she used to face financial problems and thus was compelled to remain under stress.”

DSP (CCR) Animesh Gupta, upon learning about the incident, rushed to the Golmuri Police Line to investigate the circumstances surrounding Lalita Kumari’s tragic death. “It is a case of suicide. We are investigating the exact reason behind the lady constable taking this drastic step,” he stated during a press interaction.

The police have transferred Lalita Kumari’s body to the MGM Medical College Hospital (MGMMCH) mortuary for postmortem, aiming to shed light on the events leading to this unfortunate incident. The Golmuri community mourns the loss of a dedicated constable and grapples with the harsh realities of financial struggles that pushed her to the brink.
