Jamshedpur Hosts East Singhbhum’s First Literature Festival 2026 at Gopal Maidan

Jamshedpur: The city on Friday witnessed a landmark cultural moment with the grand inauguration of the East Singhbhum Literature Festival 2026, the first-ever literature festival of the district. Organised by the East Singhbhum district administration, the three-day festival is being held from January 9 to 11, 2026, at Gopal Maidan, transforming the iconic ground into a vibrant hub of literature, art, and culture.

The inaugural ceremony drew a large gathering of writers, poets, artists, cultural practitioners, students, and officials, highlighting growing public interest in literary and cultural engagement in Kolhan and the wider Jharkhand region.

Focus on Literature, Culture, and Tribal Heritage

Addressing the audience, Arnav Mishra, Sub-Divisional Officer (Dhalbhum), said the literature festival is a significant initiative aimed at preserving and promoting diverse literary traditions, indigenous knowledge systems, art forms, and cultural expressions. He informed that eminent litterateurs, historians, thinkers, and cultural practitioners from East Singhbhum, Jharkhand, and across India are participating in the festival. He urged students, youth, and citizens to actively engage in the sessions to make the event meaningful and inclusive.

Eminent Writers and Thinkers Participate

The festival has brought together a distinguished line-up of writers and intellectuals, including Padma Shri awardees Janum Singh Soy, Haldhar Nag, and Pushpesh Pant, along with noted authors, poets and scholars such as Narayan Oraon, Anuj Lugun, Parvati Tirkey, Jerry Pinto, Neelotpal Mrinal, Chandrahass Choudhury, Ranendra Kumar, Rahul Pandita, and several others.

The opening session, titled “Jharkhandi – Worldview of Tribal Language and Literature”, featured insightful discussions by Dr Anuj Lugun and Dr Parvati Tirkey on the philosophical depth, cultural significance and contemporary relevance of tribal languages.

Key Sessions Scheduled

  • January 10: Discussions on libraries as people’s movements, Kurukh language literature, folk traditions, caste and class in contemporary India, and a special interaction with author Neelotpal Mrinal.
  • January 11: Sessions on bilingual literary expressions, centenary remembrance of Mahasweta Devi, forests and storytelling, youth interactions, visual storytelling through photography, and conversations with contemporary writers, followed by the closing ceremony.

Cultural Attractions Draw Crowds

Beyond literary debates, the festival is also showcasing rich cultural and artistic activities. Live glitter art, painting, pottery, band performances, traditional tribal welcome dances, Chhau dance, theatrical presentation of “Lohe ka Aadmi aur Loharin”, tribal games, and book and story stalls have emerged as major attractions, drawing large crowds throughout the day.

The East Singhbhum Literature Festival 2026 is being seen as a major cultural milestone for Jamshedpur, reinforcing the district’s commitment to celebrating literature, creativity, and tribal heritage on a public platform.
