Jamshedpur, Mar 17: As the Swachh Survekshan 2024 approaches, the team at Jamshedpur NAC and Tata Steel UISL are intensifying their preparations to ensure the city shines in cleanliness. With this year’s survey carrying a total weightage of 9500 marks, the theme “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” (RRR) underscores the importance of waste management from generation to disposal.

In a bid to educate and expose students to solid waste management intricacies, a one-day educational cum exposure visit was organized for 26 students of Cooperative College, alongside professors and zoology enthusiasts. The visit aimed to familiarize participants with door-to-door garbage collection processes, particularly highlighting RFID-enabled collection methods and segregation practices. Dr. Alok Suman, Chief Manager Public Health, and Jagannath Mahapatra, Assistant Manager, provided detailed insights into the system, supplemented by feedback from residents regarding service satisfaction.

Further, participants were guided through Waste Transfer Station in CH area, where the transformation of former legacy waste dump into Dalma View Point, a scenic garden, was showcased. Plans for constructing a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) were also discussed to mechanize dry garbage sorting and processing. Additionally, the City Compost Plant in Jubilee Park, managed by Om Mishra, Deputy Manager, was visited, with intentions to establish more such plants in the future.

At CRM Bara, Litti Chowk, Md Wasim, Manager WTE, and Salim Nazir, Manager CRM Bada, shed light on the magnitude of waste generation globally, underscoring the need for effective waste management practices. The team further received insights into the 24X7 public grievance system and monitoring mechanisms at the JUSCO Collaboration Center and Integrated Command and Control Center.

More educational and exposure visits are planned to engage diverse sections of society in waste management awareness and action. City Manager of Jamshedpur NAC, Christina Kachhap, SWM Consultant Geeta Kumari, and supervisors Vikas Kumar, Surendra Ravani, and Abhishek Rai played pivotal roles in orchestrating the educational initiative.
