Jamshedpur, Oct 9: Police on Friday arrested five persons, including a minor for involvement in a gangrape of a minor girl at Kaliadih under Bagbera police station area on Wednesday night.
The police also recovered a country-made pistol along with two live cartridges from the procession of those arrested. Those arrested were identified Shankar Tiu (39), Roshan Kujur (21), Suraj Patro (24), Sunny Soren (31) and a 17-year-old youth.
Revealing about the incident at a press meet, senior superintendent of police, M Tamil Vanan said that the incident took place when two girls were celebrating with their boyfriends near Ghaghidih Central Jail on Wednesday night.
“During the investigation we found that the four were enjoying the party at an isolated area, the four accused came on two bikes at the spot where the girls and their boyfriends were holding a party. The accused made the two boys run after fishing out a pistol at them and took one of the girls into their custody. They took the girl to another place where a fifth person was waiting for them. After reaching the place, two of them raped the girl while three others kept a watch outside,” said Vanan while talking to newsmen while addressing a press conference.
The senior SP said after committing the gangrape, the accused left the victim with the warning that she would have to face dire consequences if she narrated the incident. The victim rushed to the Bagbera police station and informed the police about the incident. Soon after the complaint from the victim, the police set up a team led by deputy superintendent of police (law and order) Alok Ranjan on Thursday.
Cases relating to cheating minor girls in the guise of love and marriage too have gone up. Experts blame it on slack police administration which is said to be indifferent to control criminal activities and influx of criminals from outside.
Failure of police in arresting rape accused and people’s reluctance to file FIR regarding rape are some of the factors behind rising molestation cases, said activist working for NGO.
