Jamshedpur, Nov 30: Operation to eliminate filariasis is all set to intensify in the East Singhbhum district from Thursday. Vijaya Jadhav, deputy commissioner of the district, on Wednesday convened a meeting to charter the course of action. Teams of district administration will start distributing Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP) kit among patients of filaria in the district.
During the meeting which was attended by the civil surgeon, panchayat officials, block development officers and other government officials the recommendations made by the state-level joint monitoring team for filaria elimination, that had visited the Potka block recently, were discussed. The officials said that there are 1790 patients of filaria in the district. Along with distribution of MMDP kits among the patients, the district administration will begin night survey to identify patients in the Potka block from December 3. Jadhav urged the local residents of Potka to cooperate in the drive.
Jadhav called upon the panchayat officials to play a larger role in spreading awareness about the disease among people. She said that preventive measures to curb the spread of filaria can be taken with great deal of affectivity. Jadhav stressed on the necessity to raise awareness among the public to combat this disease.
Civil surgeon, Dr Sahil Pal said that filaria is caused by mosquito bite and if treatment is provided in the first or second stage of the disease then it can be stopped from proceeding any further, if the disease reaches the seventh stage then there is no treatment available.
