Jamshedpur Durga Puja immersion mishap: Police register case against driver

Jamshedpur, Oct 26: In the aftermath of a tragic accident during the immersion of Durga’s idol at Bodhanwala Ghat in Bistupur, the district police have registered a case against an unidentified driver.

The case was initiated based on the statement provided by Magistrate Shantanu Ghosh, who was on duty at Bodhanwala Ghat at the time of the incident on Tuesday evening.

On the grounds of Magistrate’s statement, the Bistupur police station has assigned Case Number 254/2023 dated 24/10/2023 under sections 279/304(A)/337/338 IPC against the unidentified driver of vehicle number JH-05CJ-0143. The police have also seized the vehicle involved in the mishap.

On the evening of October 24, individuals from various Durga Puja committees were engaged in the immersion of idols at Kharkai river ghat of Bodhanwala under Bistupur police station. In the procession, members of the Sarvajanik Puja Committee were en route to the river with the idol in vehicle number JH-05CJ-0143 for immersion through Naya Bazaar, Jugsalai.

The incident resulted in serious injuries to five individuals who were promptly admitted to Tata Main Hospital (TMH) for treatment. The mishap also led to the death of two individuals. Unfortunately, Abhimanyu Gharai, aged about 58 years, from S.P.O. Ghuipara, Police Station Mohanpur, District West Midnapore, West Bengal, succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment.
