Canines Face Ultimate Test of Training and Discipline
Jamshedpur: The steel city is once again witnessing the loyalty, intelligence, and exceptional discipline of dogs as the 79th, 80th, and 81st Dog Shows, organised by the Jamshedpur Kennel Club, got underway at the archery ground of the JRD Tata Sports Complex.

This three-day event is not just a display of beauty but a rigorous test of training and obedience for 326 dogs from across the country, making it one of the most prestigious dog shows in eastern India.

Not Just a Beauty Contest, but a Test of Discipline
Contrary to popular belief, the dog show goes far beyond appearance. Dogs are divided into different age and skill categories—Class 1, 2, and 3. With each higher class, the rules become stricter and the level of discipline required increases, turning the competition into a true “trial by fire” for trained canines.

Tata Steel CEO Inaugurates the Event
The formal inauguration was carried out by T V Narendran, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel, who hoisted the Kennel Club flag and unveiled the championship cup. Addressing the gathering, he described the Jamshedpur Dog Show as one of the city’s most loved and prestigious events, offering a unique platform for dog lovers from across the country.

Spectacular Performances Steal the Show
The opening ceremony left spectators spellbound. Well-trained dogs from Tata Steel and Tata Motors welcomed the chief guest by presenting bouquets held in their mouths. This was followed by thrilling demonstrations such as hurdle jumps and dramatic “wall-breaking” acts, drawing loud applause from the audience.

A Legacy Since 1978
Highlighting the rich legacy of the Kennel Club, Chairperson Ruchi Narendran said the club was established in 1977 and has been organising dog shows continuously since 1978. Jamshedpur has also hosted national-level dog shows twice, in 2014 and 2025, underscoring its importance on India’s canine calendar.

This year, 326 dogs representing numerous breeds from across India are competing, impressing judges with their agility, intelligence and discipline.

Facilities for Dogs and Visitors
Special stalls related to canine health, nutrition and care have been set up at the venue. The organisers have made excellent arrangements for spectator seating as well as a dedicated grooming area for participating dogs.

Local residents said the event not only provides entertainment but also promotes awareness against animal cruelty and encourages responsible pet ownership. Winners of the final rounds over the next two days will be honoured with the prestigious “Best in Show” title.

Judging Criteria at the Jamshedpur Dog Show
- Obedience: Responding correctly to the handler’s signals, including turning and stopping
- Focus Test: Waiting calmly at a distance and approaching correctly when called
- Gait and Structure: Walking style, posture, and physical balance
- Temperament: Calmness and concentration amid people and noise

Indian and Foreign Breeds on Display
Along with popular foreign breeds such as German Shepherds, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers, several rare breeds are also attracting attention. Expert judges are closely examining the dental structure, bone strength, and coat quality of each dog.

The coordination between dog handlers and their pets remains a major highlight, reflecting years of dedicated training and effort behind every champion dog.
