Jamshedpur: Sept 20:  The ongoing strike by doctors at MGM Hospital in Jamshedpur has escalated as they demand justice for a junior doctor who was brutally assaulted by the family members of a deceased patient on Monday night.

The incident has left the healthcare system in disarray, affecting thousands of patients who rely on the hospital’s services.

The situation has taken a serious turn as doctors remain resolute in their strike until the accused assailants were  arrested and sent to jail. In response to the crisis, Rural SP Rishabh Garg and Dhalbhum SDO Piyush Sinha have held meetings with the doctors, urging them to end their strike. However, the doctors have made it clear that they will not relent until justice was served.

The incident that triggered the strike involved a junior doctor who was deployed on duty to treat a young gir who later died.  Shockingly, the doctor was subjected to a brutal assault by the deceased patient’s family members, resulting in severe injuries. In protest against this horrifying act of violence, doctors at MGM Hospital initiated their strike on Tuesday.

The strike has garnered support from nursing staff, further worsening the situation and causing a breakdown in the hospital’s functioning. MGM Hospital is the largest government heal hubl in Kolhan, catering to over a thousand patients daily, especially during the current surge in dengue cases and seasonal diseases.

With the strike underway, the healthcare system has been severely compromised, leaving patients in distress.

In addition to the demand for the arrest of the accused assailants, doctors and nursing staff have voiced concerns about the need for improved security in the hospital. They are also calling for the implementation of the Medical Protection Act to safeguard healthcare professionals in the line of duty.

SDO Sinha has assured the medical community that efforts were underway to address the situation and apprehend the culprits. However, doctors remain sceptical of these assurances and maintain that the strike will persist until concrete action was taken to ensure justice for their assaulted colleague.

The doctors’ strike at MGM Hospital underscores the critical issue of violence against healthcare workers and highlights the urgent need for measures to protect medical professionals who are dedicated to saving lives, especially during these challenging times when the healthcare system is under tremendous pressure due to the increasing incidence of diseases.
