Jamshedpur: The controversial arrest of Army Havildar Suraj Rai by Jugsalai police has sparked outrage, prompting Jharkhand DGP Anurag Gupta to order a thorough investigation. Taking strong exception to the incident, the DGP directed Kolhan DIG to probe the matter and take strict action against the responsible officers.
According to police headquarters, it is highly inappropriate for a serving soldier to be sent to jail without proper legal protocol. The correct procedure in such cases is to inform and hand over the soldier to the nearest army unit, allowing military authorities to take disciplinary action as per their regulations.
Suraj Rai, posted in Akhnoor, Kashmir, was arrested on March 14 along with his cousin Vijay Rai following a dispute with Jugsalai police station driver Chhotu Billa. When Suraj Rai accompanied his cousin to the police station to inquire about the matter, officers allegedly misbehaved with both men and sent them to jail. The family further alleged that Suraj Rai was beaten while in custody. Although he was released on bail on March 19, the incident has triggered widespread condemnation.
The All India Ex-Servicemen Service Council staged protests outside the Jugsalai police station and the DC’s office, demanding justice. The council called for the immediate dismissal of false charges against Suraj Rai, disciplinary action against the police officers involved and strict adherence to military protocols in future cases concerning armed forces personnel.
With the DGP’s intervention, expectations are high that corrective measures will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
