Businessman under friend’s pressure to return borrowed money

Jamshedpur, July 30: The reported incident of Rs 11.20 lakh being looted at gunpoint on Tuesday, July 27 near Belajuri Kali temple on National highway under MGM police station, turned out to be false in the intensive police investigation. Adityapur resident Rakesh Das who runs a mobile repair business and recharges phones had complained to the MGM police on July 27 that he was going to Galudih on his motorcycle with a bag containing Rs 11.20 lakh in cash to repay a loan of Rs Seven lakh he had taken from his friend to repay his friend Tamal Majhi and had kept another Rs 4 lakh in the bag as repayment amount of another loan to pay his brother and on the way at around 4;30 pm he stopped near the Belajuri Kali Mandir to relieve himself when two bike borne riders with helmets on looted the bag at gunpoint and escaped towards Jamshedpur. Rakesh mentioned in his report that he had given chase to the robbers but could not catch up with them.
On stern questioning by the police Rakesh Das confessed that he had made up the story to stall for time to repay his friend Tamal Majhi of Galudih who was pressurizing him for payment as the money was given from his friend’s father’s retirement benefit funds.
SSP Dr M Tamil Vanan while revealing the nature of the concocted story said that Rakesh Das had created a false story of robbery so that he could get more time to repay the loan money. The SSP said that Rakesh first went to Galudih police station with a complaint of robbery. Galudih PS OC investigated the matter and the site of the purported loot being under MGM police station command area, Rakesh Das was sent there. Dr M Tamil Vanan further stated that Rakesh had shared the live location with friend Tamal Majhi to make him believe that he was on the way to return the money. Later he switched of his mobile phone Rakesh Das then reached Galudih and narrated about the ‘loot’ incident to his friend Tamal Majhi. They both went to Galudih police station.
The police smelt a rat in Rakesh’s story and during questioning he was repeatedly changing his statement. Rakesh will be booked under Secs 182/211 for misleading the police and wasting their time. The matter will be put up in court. This can lead to imprisonment of up to six months. (w-gs)
