Jamshedpur, Aug 3: In a major breakthrough, city police here busted an inter-state gang of vehicle lifters by arresting five of its members. As many as 67 stolen bikes were recovered in a series of raids conducted on the basis of information spilled by the culprits, police said.
Those arrested were identified as Vikas Patro, Hare Krishna Gope, Mokro Hansda, Sheikh Azharuddin and Mohammad Akram Khan, all local residents.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), East Singhbhum, Prabha Kumar, said the vehicle lifters’ gang was stealing bikes from various places across the district for the last several days. “A youth was arrested from Kamalpur in a bike theft case. Later, during investigation, it was found that a bigger inter-state gang is involved in the series of bike thefts. Thereafter, five persons were arrested.”

Police had first arrested Vikas Patro and later reached his associates. A team led by DSP Mosabani, Chandrashekhar Azad, was formed to crack down on the gang.
The gang members used to either mortgage the stolen bikes or sell them. The gang operated at three levels. One group used to steal bikes while the second group would sell or mortage the bikes. The third group used to find customers for the stolen bikes, said the SSP.
The SSP said the bike used to sell bikes to customers outside Jharkhand. The gang members used to tell local villagers that they deal in second-hand bikes, he said.
