Jamshedpur Coronavirus: 50-bed paediatric centre to come up at Kantilal Gandhi Memorial Hospital

Jamshedpur, June 3: In the wake of the possibility of a third Covid wave, the district administration has decided to come up with a special corona facility for children.  A 50-bedded paediatric hospital has been planned at Kantilal Gandhi Memorial Hospital (KGMH) at Bistupur.

The proposed paediatric hospital will be set by the district administration up for Covid patients, as part of its strategy to combat Covid.

Revealing about the plans, district civil surgeon, AK Lal said the district administration has taken up the KGMH for combating Covid among the children.

” As part of our strategy to counter the third wave of Covid we are going to set up the paediatric  hospital at the KGMH. Once the pandemic is over, we will hand over the hospital to the KGMH trust, ” said Lal.

The civil surgeon stated that all necessary steps regarding the starting of the Covid hospital for the children have been completed and the work in this regard will be completed soon.

Located at South Park in Bistupur, Kantilal Gandhi Memorial Hospital has been referred to as Medica Hospital since September 2014 when the Kolkata-based hospital chain signed a deal to manage it. However, with the end of the contract the hospital management decided to wind up.  In view of the shortage of beds the hospital has been revived. The paediatric  hospital will come up alongside the existing Covid treatment facility there.

After the pandemic re-emerged in March this year and several children also fell victim to the Coronavirus, the East Singhbhum deputy commissioner, Suraj Kumar took up the decision to take over the hospital to set up a paediatric  hospital there.

Tata Main Hospital ( TMH) has also decided to come up with special corona wards for children. The leading health hub is studying  the overall scenario and will come up with appropriate actions from time to time.

Dr Rajan Choudhry, advisor, and former general manager, medical services, Tata Steel said that with reports suggesting impact on children during the third wave they are focusing on facilities for children. He said the hospital is acting proactively to strengthen facilities, so the situation could be handled in the best possible way.

“We have decided to come up with special corona wards for children in order to combat the impact of the third wave. This is a part of our strategy for the third wave,” Dr Choudhry.
