Jamshedpur Co-operative Law College struggles with infrastructure

Jamshedpur, March 5: Despite being granted independent status in 2024, Jamshedpur Co-operative Law College, the only law college in Kolhan division, continues to suffer from a severe lack of infrastructure. Students are facing multiple challenges, including insufficient classrooms, the absence of a permanent moot court and poor campus conditions that worsen during the rainy season.

The problem has persisted for over two decades. Until last year, the college functioned as a unit of Co-operative College, preventing it from receiving separate funding from Kolhan University. As a result, infrastructure development remained stagnant and the institution had to rely on limited funds from the Co-operative College and student fees. Even after gaining independent status, development has been slow.

“It is disappointing that even after 24 years, basic facilities have not been fully developed,” said Ashish Sholay, an alumnus of the college. Students continue to struggle with unpaved pathways, making it difficult to move around the campus during rain. “Even going to the toilet becomes challenging due to waterlogging,” added a student.

Principal Dr. Jitendra Kumar acknowledged the concerns and assured that work is underway. “Now that the college has independent status, development is progressing slowly. The issue with the access path is being addressed and Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) is working on it,” he stated.

Student leaders have urged the university and government to speed up development. “For students to enroll, the college must have better facilities,” emphasized Mukesh Rajak, a student leader. Another leader, Bapan Ghosh, stressed that Kolhan University must prioritize improving access roads and classrooms.

Authorities have promised further developments, including the installation of paver blocks, additional classrooms and the construction of a permanent moot court. However, students and alumni remain sceptical, hoping for faster implementation of these much-needed changes.
