Jamshedpur citizens amid Heat, hope, humidity on Friday

Jamshedpur, May 19: It is oft said that morning shows the day. Friday was no different. Moments before the sun peeped over the eastern horizon, people already up and about could sense the ominous trend of sadistically creeping mercury level that has been the bane throughout this week and more pole-vaulting the 40 degree Celsius level (Friday’s maximum reading 41.1 degree C) and as the clock ticked on, the harshness of this scorcher of a summer started settling in its ascending groove.

However, as the day huffed and puffed along, distant rumblings could be heard and unlike other times, they sounded like music, more to the heart than their ears. The sky was covered with clouds almost out of the blue. If the panting humans had plumes they would have performed the peacocks’ dance. The rumbling became louder and large drops of rain touched a parched earth from which emanated the pleasant aroma of soil lapping up the initial drops of liquid manna from heaven.

Dreams of relief were very much there. But this mental siesta of less than the usual 40 winks dried up as the sun parted the cloud cover and in mockery, came down with more vengeance along with a sack load of humidity. The unlucky few who had to venture out under such post-noon conditions could do nothing more than swear on one’s own fate.

The birds continued to seek relief with parted beaks, canines panted on and the bovine lot moved around aimlessly while waiting for their owners to take them to their sheds, milk them and then shoo them away to seek their own fodder and fortune on the streets that are their usual homes. They have not been designed to crib or curse. Humans, however, have those powers and more like, they can pray for summer relief. Their Prayers being heard up there is of course, a separate proposition.
