Chain Snatching in Jamshedpur: Public Angry Over Police Delay

Jamshedpur: A surge in snatching incidents has left the women of Jamshedpur in a state of fear. In the latest incident on Thursday night, two bike-borne criminals snatched a gold chain from a woman near JPS School in Kalu Bagan, Sidhgora. The police’s delayed response has sparked significant anger among local residents.

The Incident

The victim, identified as Kanti Devi, was returning home on foot from the market around 7:45 PM. As she approached JPS School, two men on a Pulsar motorcycle intercepted her and ripped a gold chain (weighing approximately 7-8 grams) from her neck.

Kanti Devi raised an alarm, and while neighbours rushed to the spot, the snatchers managed to flee the scene.

Police Negligence Sparks Protest

Despite the Sidhgora Police Station being located just 1.5 kilometres from the crime scene, it took officials nearly an hour to reach the spot. This delay has fueled public resentment. Locals pointed out that this is the second major snatching in Sidhgora in just five days.

On February 21, snatchers targeted a woman near the Sidhgora Post Office. When locals attempted to chase them, the criminals opened fire to secure their escape. Police are yet to make any arrests in that case as well.

A Growing Trend of Crime

Data suggests that snatching gangs are operating with impunity across the city. Residents are questioning the effectiveness of police patrolling, especially given the repetitive nature of these crimes.
