Jamshedpur: Burmamines shopkeepers peeved by JNAC enhanced rent

Jamshedpur, June 15: Burmamines Bazaar Welfare Committee (BBWC) convened a meeting on Wednesday evening and decried Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee’s (JNAC) decision to enhance shop rents exorbitantly that shot up by 700 folds and more.

The BBWC members stated that the Tata Steel’s decision to demolish employee quarters in Burmamines and constructing boundary wall around the former quarter site, added to the woes of shopkeepers as a major portion of residents had sought accommodation elsewhere thus leading to their businesses hitting rock bottom. Members complained that with majority of Burmamines population drastically reduced, they were somehow managing to keep their body and soul intact. Under such conditions, the new rent surge was JNAC’s draconian decision and the multifold hike in shop rents could never be paid.

BBWC members narrated their sad status and these amounted to a mass consensus that the enhanced rent issue would be impossible to meet. BBWC warned JNAC that if the decision of 700 and more folds increase on shops was not reconsidered, revised or rolled back, the Burmamines shopkeepers would be forced to launch violent protests in the current do-or-die situation.

All shopkeepers attended this BBWC meeting among whom were Tara Shankar Mukherjee, Durga Das, Munna, Rahul Singh, Sushant Mallick, Shamim Khan, Prakash and many others.
