Jamshedpur, Dec 23: In their drive against drug peddlers engaged in sale and purchase of brown sugar, police nabbed a 28-year-old youth with the drug from the crowded Sakchi market on Friday morning.
The culprit was identified as Sandeep Kumar Shrivastava, the youth was himself down with the influence of the narcotic drugs.
Sakchi police station OC, Sanjay Singh said the youth was arrested with 14 packets of brown sugar. “ We tried interrogating the youth but he seemed down with a heavy dose of the brown sugar. It could not be established whether the accused had possessed over a dozen of the drugs for selling them or for his own consumption. We have sent the youth for a medical examination before forwarding him to judicial custody,” said Singh.
The district police now seem to be determined to curb the sale of brown sugar from the steel city. SP (City) K Vijay Shankar said that they are trying to reach the main source of the brown sugar supply to the steel city. “We are in touch with the police of some neighbouring states to reach out to the source of the brown sugar supply to the city. We are hopeful of nailing the main supplier soon,” said Vijay Shankar.
A senior police officer pointed out that another youth other than Sandeep Kumar Shrivastav is now being interrogated here, adding that the police may crack the racket of the brown sugar supply and sale soon.
A police officer spoke of a multi-pronged strategy, targeting both the demand and supply sides of the drug traffic. This would involve cultivating sources among the student community and tracing the drug trafficking networks, located mostly in the State. “There has been a drastic change in the pattern of consumption from natural psychotropic substances to chemical compounds as is evident from recent cases,” he noted.
With the rising alcohol and drug addiction among adolescents in the steel city being a major cause of concern, medical experts and counsellors have stressed the need for coming out of the denial mode and imbibing strong family values so that children do not fall prey to peer pressure.
Officials attribute the boom in the drug culture to the pumping in of money from the Gulf countries as well as to the boom in the realty sector.
