Jamshedpur braces for thunderstorms, lightning and hail until April 18

Jamshedpur: Unstable and volatile weather conditions are expected to grip Jharkhand over the coming days, with widespread thunderstorms, lightning, hail, and gusty winds predicted to sweep across various regions of the state. According to the Ranchi Meteorological Centre, these stormy conditions are expected to intensify and engulf the entire state by April 18.

The weather office has issued a warning for multiple districts, urging residents to exercise caution as sudden changes in weather could lead to hazardous conditions. On April 15, isolated pockets in the south-eastern, adjoining central, and north-eastern parts of Jharkhand witnessed hailstorms accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour.

In addition, parts of western and north-eastern Jharkhand may experience gusty winds between 40 and 50 kilometers per hour, coupled with thunder and lightning. The inclement weather is expected to persist across most parts of the state on April 16 and 17, with wind speeds continuing to reach up to 50 kmph. However, the western region may see a brief respite on April 17.

The current spell of turbulent weather has been attributed to a Western Disturbance located as a trough at mid to upper tropospheric levels. This trough extends at around 5.8 kilometers above sea level along latitude 83°E and north of latitude 20°N. This system is significantly influencing the atmosphere over Jharkhand and neighboring states.

Additionally, a trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over northeast Madhya Pradesh to south coastal Odisha, passing through Chhattisgarh at about 1.5 kilometers above sea level, is also contributing to the development of intense weather activity. The interaction of these systems is creating favorable conditions for the formation of cumulonimbus clouds—responsible for thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms.

Given the forecast, local authorities and disaster response teams have been placed on alert. The meteorological department has advised people to remain indoors during thunderstorm activity, avoid sheltering under trees, stay away from open fields, and unplug electronic appliances during lightning events. Farmers are also being advised to take precautions to protect their crops, particularly those sensitive to hail and heavy rain.

The Jharkhand State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has been closely monitoring the situation and has issued alerts to district administrations, urging them to keep emergency response systems ready. Urban local bodies have also been instructed to clear clogged drains and ensure that electric poles and billboards are secure in anticipation of high winds.

The unpredictable weather is expected to disrupt day-to-day life, especially in rural areas where outdoor work and farming activities are currently underway. The threat of hailstorms has raised concerns among the farming community, particularly those cultivating vegetables and seasonal fruits. Transportation, particularly in storm-prone and hilly areas, may also be affected.

In urban areas like Jamshedpur, Ranchi, and Dhanbad, residents may experience traffic snarls due to sudden rain showers and fallen tree branches. The administration has also requested citizens to report any incidents of damage caused by the storms to the respective local control rooms.

While such weather is not uncommon during the pre-monsoon months, its intensity and frequency this year have raised concerns. Meteorologists believe that such patterns could continue through the second half of April before the weather begins to stabilize.
