Jamshedpur Black Fungus: MGM Hospital comes up with special ward


Jamshedpur: In view of rising cases of mucurmycosis or black fungus cases in the city, MGM Medical College Hospital has set up a ward for the treatment of the patients.

 Though there has been no case of black fungus at the MGM Medical College Hospital, the authority concerned has set up a 10-bedded ward at the hospital.

However, Tata Main Hospital (TMH) has witnessed three deaths due to Mucormycosis or black fungus. A total of seven patients suffering from black fungus were admitted at the hospital out of which three died. The black fungus infection is primarily affecting people who are recovering from Covid-19. As per health experts, this spreads through the nose and affects other parts of the body such as the eyes. People with diabetes are said to be more vulnerable to the infection.

Nodal officer, MGM Medical College Hospital, Nakul Prashad Chaudhury said that the ward for mucurmycosis has been set up at the Eye department.

 ” In view of rising cases we have taken the step.  We had a 30-bedded ward in the Eye department. Presently, no surgery is being carried out at the Eye department. In view of growing Mucormycosis in the district, we have set up a separate 10-bedded ward for this disease, ” said Chaudhury.

The nodal officer, who is also deputy superintendent of the medical college hospital said that the hospital also has adequate stock of Emphoterecin – B, the drug required for the treatment of the black fungus.

Chaudhury, on being queried, said they set up a separate ward for the treatment of mucurmycosis at the medical college hospital because people hailing from rural areas of the district look for Government hospital for the treatment.

 Black fungus is detected in the patients during post-Covid treatment. Such Covid patients who have uncontrolled diabetes, among other grievous ailments, and administered excessive steroids during the treatment of Covid get prone to mucurmycosis.

 MGM Medical College and Hospital is a government hospital with a facility of 540 beds. Everyday around 1000 patients come here for treatment. It may be mentioned that the State Government governed Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital, is an Indian medical school established in 1964. It is situated in the outskirts of Jamshedpur near Dimna. The college’s hospital is located in Sakchi.
