Rising Banking Fraud in Jamshedpur: AI-Powered ‘ScamShield’ Emerges as a Digital Protection

Jamshedpur / Bhopal: Residents of Jamshedpur are increasingly falling prey to sophisticated digital heists, with local authorities reporting at least three to four cases every month involving fraudulent banking apps. As cybercriminals refine their tactics to target the city’s bank account holders, a breakthrough innovation from students at the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) offers a new line of defence: ScamShield.

The Threat in Jamshedpur

Cyber-fraudsters in the Steel City have been utilizing a specific “APK link” tactic. Victims receive messages via platforms like WhatsApp or SMS, luring them into downloading a file that appears to be a legitimate banking update. Once installed, these clone apps capture:

  • Login IDs and Passwords
  • Real-time OTPs (One-Time Passwords)
  • Personal Financial Data

With full access to these credentials, attackers can drain accounts within minutes, often before the victim even realizes the app is fake.

How ScamShield Protects Users

ScamShield uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to act as a digital filter between the user and malicious software.

  • Deep Code Analysis: Unlike standard antivirus software, ScamShield analyzes the internal code and behavior of an app. It checks if the app is asking for unnecessary permissions (like reading your SMS or contacts) that a standard banking app wouldn’t need.
  • The “Risk Score” System: When a Jamshedpur resident receives a suspicious link, the system scans the app and generates a Risk Score. If the score is high, it warns the user immediately, preventing the installation of the fraud tool.
  • Extensive Training: The AI has been trained on thousands of datasets containing both genuine banking interfaces and known malicious clones to ensure high accuracy.
