Police seize arms, recover cash and silver coins

Jamshedpur, Oct 19: An inter-state gang operating in Jharkhand and Bihar had carried out the dacoity at the Dimna Road branch of Bank of India on 18th August last. The same gang was involved in the loot of Rs 32 lakh from the staff of Chhaganlal Dayaljee Sons jewelry showroom at Bistupur. City police have arrested five of its members including the kingpin and his wife. This was revealed on Wednesday by the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of East Singhbhum, Prabhat Kumar, at a press conference.

The SSP said the police had confiscated four guns, 52 bullets, 26 silver coins and cash worth Rs 30,000 from the possession of the gang members. The accused have been identified as Rajeev Ranjan Kumar alias Pappu, Nibha Kumari, Dharmendra Kumar, Neraj Baraili and Pramod Bind alias Santosh. Rajeev is the kingpin of the gang and Nibha is his wife.

“The accused persons were about to leave for Nepal when they were arrested. Two bikes used by them in the crime have also been seized. Rajeev Ranjan has been running the gang since 1995. Four years ago, he had fled from Patna Jail and has been on police radar ever since. There are more than 100 members in the gang which has been operating in the same style for the last 27 years. The gang has committed dacoity in Rajasthan, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand and many other states. It carries a modified container (vehicle) with it wherever it goes and conceals its arms inside it,” said the SSP.

“After committing the bank dacoity at Dimna Road, the gang members had fled to Kolkata and from there to Nepal. Later, they returned to Patna. Pramod and Dharmendra were arrested first and later Rajeev, Nibha and Neeraj were arrested. The culprits used to invest looted money in real estate and other businesses,” said the SSP.

The gang had looted cash worth Rs 33.68 lakh and 2.32 kg gold worth Rs 1.12 crore from the bank.
