Jamshedpur: Bagbera residents agitate over pending water supply project

Jamshedpur, Feb 17: Members of Bagbera Mahanagar Vikas Samiti and Sampoorna Ghaghidih Vikas Samiti staged a demonstration at Jamshedpur Collectorate here on Thursday to demand speedy completion of the pending Bagera rural water supply project and action against those responsible for sub-standard quality of construction under the said projects.

The protestors said a 10-point memorandum addressed to Chief Minister Hemant Soren was handed over to the deputy commissioner of East Singhbhum Suraj Kumar after the agitation. “In case our various demands are not fulfilled, we will have no option, but to take to the streets. We have given an ultimatum of 15 days to the state government. We will also file a public interest litigation in the Jharkhand High Court to ensure a logical conclusion of these issues,” said Subodh Jha, president of Bagbera Mahanagar Vikas Samiti.

A large number of villagers were present during the demonstration programme. Their various demands include speedy implementation of the Bagbera rural water supply project, supply of water to all panchayats and localities and making clean drinking water available to the people of 113 villages of 19 panchayats in Bagbera, Ghaghidih and Parsudih.

The protestors said the benefits of Bagbera rural water supply project had not reached the local residents till date. The pillars of the project were washed away in rains at Baroda Ghat and the boundary wall of the filter plant here had also collapsed which smacked of large-scale corruption, they said.
