Jamshedpur and Jharkhand brace for intense heat as temperatures set to rise by 4-6°C

Jamshedpur: The Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Ranchi Meteorological Centre has predicted a significant rise in temperature across Jharkhand over the next four days. According to officials, the maximum temperature is expected to increase by 4-6 degrees Celsius, bringing intense summer heat to the state.

After a brief respite due to recent thunderstorms and rainfall, Jharkhand is once again set to experience dry and clear weather. Weathermen have ruled out the possibility of thunderstorm activity in the coming days. “The weather conditions would be mainly clear and dry over the state in the next few days,” said an on-duty official at the Ranchi Meteorological Centre. He further added that the dip in temperature over the past few days, caused by thunderstorm activity, would now be reversed with a gradual increase in maximum temperatures.

With the mercury set to rise, several parts of Jharkhand, including Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, and Bokaro, are expected to witness heatwave-like conditions. Cities in the western and central parts of the state, such as Palamu, Garhwa, and Chatra, which traditionally experience high temperatures, may be the worst affected.

Heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and sunstroke are expected to rise. Health experts are advising residents to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct exposure to the sun during peak hours, and wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.

Satellite images from today indicate a trough in the westerlies at middle and upper tropospheric levels. This trough, with its axis positioned between 5.8 and 7.6 km above mean sea level along Long. 84°E to the north of Lat. 20°N, is contributing to the prevailing dry weather conditions.

Additionally, a cyclonic circulation persists over northeast Assam and its neighboring areas, situated at 1.5 km above the mean sea level. However, this weather system is unlikely to have any impact on Jharkhand, ensuring that the state remains under the grip of rising temperatures.

The Jharkhand State Disaster Management Authority (JSDMA) has urged citizens to remain cautious during the upcoming heatwave. “People should avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours, drink plenty of fluids, and take adequate precautions to protect themselves from heatstroke,” said an official from JSDMA.

Farmers, construction workers, and daily wage laborers have been advised to take breaks and ensure proper hydration to prevent heat-related ailments. Authorities are also urging local administrations to ensure the availability of drinking water in public places to help mitigate the impact of the rising temperatures.
