Jamshedpur Airport stuck in administrative limbo

Jamshedpur, June 3:Despite persistent efforts, the Dhalbhumgarh airport project near Jamshedpur faces ongoing hurdles, ranging from environmental concerns to land disputes. The delay, now spanning four years, has prompted inquiries in Parliament, yet no resolution has been reached.

Recent revelations from a Right to Information inquiry conducted by Shashank Shekhar shed light on the core of the issue: the proposal for Dhalbhumgarh has not even reached the Central Forest and Environment Ministry for necessary clearances. Once environmental approval is obtained, a significant portion of the deadlock is expected to dissipate.

The impasse has largely revolved around concerns regarding environmental clearances and the existence of an elephant corridor. Despite attempts to address these issues, including a directive to conduct a fresh Gram Sabha, progress remains elusive due to a bureaucratic quagmire between the Gram Sabha and the state government.

Encouragingly, the recent removal of land-related hurdles has injected some optimism into the project. The Principal Chief Forest Conservator of Jharkhand has given the green light for airport construction and forwarded the file to the Forest Environment and Climate Change Department.

The airport, once operational, is poised to significantly enhance air travel accessibility for residents of Jamshedpur, located approximately 55 km away. Additionally, it will cater to passengers from Bengal-Odisha regions, alleviating the need for them to travel to Ranchi or Kolkata for air travel.

Despite initial optimism following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Jharkhand government and the Airport Authority of India in 2019, challenges related to land acquisition and environmental concerns have hindered progress. However, with concerted efforts and administrative cooperation, it is hoped that the long-awaited Dhalbhumgarh airport will soon become a reality, bridging the gap in regional air connectivity.
