Jamshedpur Airport project: Forest dept denies NOC

Mail News Service

Jamshedpur, Jan 15: Dhalbhumgarh Airport Project has hit a roadblock with the forest department refusing to give no objection certificate (NOC) necessary for its completion, sources said.

Sources said the forest department has turned down the government demand for land required to build the proposed airport. The department has said that the entire area belongs to forest and falls under Elephant Corridor.

The forest dept has said that the airport project, if completed, would adversely affect the movement of elephants. “The land on which the Airport and runway are proposed to be built are entirely used by the elephants as a traditional path. Elephants have been roaming in this region for ages,” sources quoted forest officials as saying.

KL Agrawal, Director, Ranchi Airport, said the Dhalbhumgarh Airport Project work had stopped for the time being as the forest department had objected to the airport proposal, he said.

  1. 3 years past no developement ın dalbhum aırport project why govet wastıng tıme ınstead better shıft the proposal to somewhere near kandra or ghamarıa.the state govt ıs playıng dırty game.Tata steel should be gıven permıssıon to buılt the aırport.jamshedpur cneed aırport badly.polıtıcıans wants project to get delayed.shame on our polıtıcal partıes.

  2. The government is simply doing what it does best – delaying time and playing politics. Is has been years and Jamshedpur still does not have a proper airport inspite of such great demand by the public.

If the site is not suitable as it would create disturbance to wildlife, the government should immediately start looking for another piece of land.

Note: Dhalbhumgarh is already too far from the main city in the middle of nowhere. A more close and suitable area should be chosen for the purpose.

  3. shows lack & apathy of the government, they are unable to decide on a suitable site for Airport which has been long pending, probably they should hand it over to Tata’s and JSR will have an airport in no time.

  4. A complete eyewash..why was an airport proposed in wildlife area?.Jamshedpur badly needs a airport and because of the political games the common people are government should come up with an alternative on urgent basis.

  5. Vet unfortunate, the way state government attitude as well local politicians interest. It took three years to know the refusal status.
There is no space for to build airport. Look at Orissa how fast they are growing.

  6. Congress & JMM. NO development is possible. Nothing moves without corruption, money and scam. Do we need more than 23 years now to understand these beggar politicians. Padma Bhusan should be given to Forest Department for manufacturing a reason in 3 years. Jharkhand is becoming a frustrating place.

  7. I agree with the decision. But I would recommend CHAKULIA old airport to be renovate into new airport as there will be no issue of any forest area. Even though there is much bigger area for runways and other needs. If possible government would look after that. If such things happen then it will be a proud moment for Jamshedpur and this can be one of the biggest airport.

  8. I do agree with the comments posted by others. It’s unbelievable that such a high demand is being ignored widely. Other airports like durgapur, deoghar etc already started. An airport with a distance of 60 km from the city is just waste of everything..

  9. It is shameful for all that Jamshedpur has no Airport for domestic flights !! The people are suffering to this great level !!! The citizens must start agitation strongly for the Airport !!! New location within 20 km should be the best !!! What minister r doing in Jamshedpur !!!

  10. There is huge barren land available across kharkai river near toll bridge on ring road. Tata Steel proposed to develop Airport at their own cost. But due to dirty politics under the banner of JMM and land mafia unsolicited movement started and finally this idea had to be dropped and forgotten for bigger scams. The whole land is still barren and not covered under forest department. There is no vegetation except for one or two legal/ illegal brick kilns.

  11. I am agreed with Mr. Prakash. The State Govt. Should work out for another piece of land Airport near Gamharia, kandra or Dugni. As Dhalbhum garh is far from main City and major forest issues for Elephant Corridor.

  12. If someone really wanted it I’m sure they would have found a way. Be it tata steel or the government. They are not interested. Its sad that common people always have to suffer. Just remember that places like deoghar chattisgarh and all small places now have an airport and we don’t have it. Tata owns vistara and air india and we don’t have an airport. I wish reliance was here instead of Tata. We would have had some development. Where are the old Jamshed ji values? Giving back to the community?

  13. Most of Jharkhand’s politicians are corrupt, they don’t have anything to do with the demands of the people, they don’t want to Demand the central government or Permanent assembly session, rail, airport, industry etc etc

  14. Hi,

Regarding the proposed development of Dhalbhumgarh Airport near Jamshedpur, this project has been under discussion for several years, yet it remains incomplete. There are many opinions among the public—some mention political challenges, others raise concerns about the elephant corridor, forest and environmental approvals, or lack of development priority.

All these concerns may have some validity. However, what is most important now is transparency, coordination, and timely decision-making.

Jamshedpur is an important industrial city, and improved air connectivity is essential for economic growth, business, emergency services, and overall regional development. At the same time, environmental protection and wildlife safety must also be respected and carefully managed.

We humbly request the concerned authorities and government bodies to:

Provide clear updates on the project status
Address environmental and wildlife concerns responsibly
    Resolve administrative or political delays
Ensure a balanced and sustainable approach

The people are not against development or nature—we want both to progress together in a planned and responsible way.

Kindly take necessary action and keep the public informed.
