Jamshedpur: The East Singhbhum district administration penalized sleeper buses on Saturday for compromising passenger safety. Acting on Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi’s directives, officials launched a special inspection drive and took action against 17 sleeper buses for violating mandatory safety standards.
Bus Owners Ordered to Comply with Regulations
During the inspection, officials found many buses ignoring emergency facilities and construction standards. The District Transport Officer (DTO) issued notices and a stern warning to the defaulting bus owners to ensure that their vehicles comply with the norms within the stipulated time. Authorities clarified that failing to make improvements would lead to strict legal action, and these drives will continue to ensure passenger safety.
Compliance with AIS Standards Mandatory for Safe Travel
The Ministry of Road Transport’s AIS-052 standards dictate the structural strength and design of emergency exits for buses. Additionally, AIS-119 is specific to sleeper coaches, ensuring correct berth sizes and adequate aisle width for easy evacuation during emergencies. These standards also mandate the use of fire-retardant materials. Violating these norms poses a significant threat to passenger lives.
