Jamshedpur: The Steel City has formally kick-started preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2025, setting an ambitious target of achieving a 7-star Garbage-Free City (GFC) certification and emerging as the cleanest city in the country in the population category of 3 to 7 lakh.
An important review meeting was held on Saturday at the JUSCO office in Bistupur, jointly chaired by Tata Steel UISL (formerly JUSCO) General Manager R.K. Singh and Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) Deputy Town Commissioner Krishna Kumar. During the meeting, officials discussed applying for the 7-star certification and reviewed strategies to strengthen the city’s sanitation performance.
The meeting focused in detail on the new evaluation framework and marking system introduced for Swachh Survekshan 2025. Officials said that while Jamshedpur already has a strong sanitation infrastructure, achieving a 7-star rating will depend largely on active public participation. Segregation of waste at source—wet, dry, and hazardous—will be mandatory across households.
Special monitoring will be carried out this year on bulk waste generators such as hotels, restaurants, marriage halls, and educational institutions. These establishments have been directed to ensure on-site processing of wet waste. Schools will also be linked with community-level cleanliness and awareness campaigns to promote sustainable sanitation practices.
Deputy Town Commissioner Krishna Kumar said that attaining a 7-star rating is possible only through the collective efforts of authorities and citizens alike. Echoing this sentiment, Tata Steel UISL GM R.K. Singh appealed to residents to actively participate and help make Jamshedpur the cleanest city in India.
What Citizens Need to Do:
- Segregate waste at home and hand it over properly to sanitation workers
- Avoid littering on roads, parks, and public places
- Ensure full compliance with solid waste management rules, especially by large institutions
- Share positive cleanliness initiatives online to help build a strong image of the city
With coordinated efforts from civic bodies, industries, institutions, and residents, Jamshedpur hopes to set a national benchmark in urban cleanliness in this year.
