Jamshedpur: The state jail administration has decided to implement ambitious plans to install 3G jammers from the existing 2G jammers installed across the jails by this September. Authorities claimed that the 3G jammer will guarantee cent percent blocking of telecom signals.
According to information the administration is looking for an alternative to the jammers for blocking the telecom signals between the jail inmates and outside world. The jail authority will install upgraded 3G jammers.
The department is serious about installing the devices at the back of feedback from jail staff suggesting that convicts and undertrials take advantage of the absence of a foolproof system for blocking mobile phone signals.
Since despite 2G jammers installed in the jails, one can communicate easily from a 2-G phone from or outside the jail.
“We have been receiving complains that despite installation of the 2G jammers across the 26 jails in the state two years back the telecom signals are being blocked. We have received complains that criminals are using phones inside the jail including Ghaghidih Central Jail and keeping contact with the outside jail. We are in favour to spend more money for installing the 3-G jammers,” he said.
They are also in touch with the best jails in the country, including the Tihar Jail, but so far have not got any alternative.
It may be recalled that the state prison authorities had sent a proposal to the home department for installing 3G jammers in all the 26 jails of Jharkhand following a survey by Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL). Although the jails are equipped with 2G jammers, the instruments meant to block relay of signals to the mobile phones have not served the purpose with prisoners switching to 3G phones.
He pointed out that effective functioning of jammers is the greatest challenge before him so far the question of isolating the jail inmates from the outside world.
He revealed that he personally examined whether the 2-G jammers are working at Ghaghidih Central Jail here, and was shocked to know that the existing electronic gadgets are not functioning effectively.
It may be mentioned that during a surprise raid, district officials and police had recovered a 3G handset and three SIM cards lying abandoned outside one of the 13 wards in Ghaghidih Central Jail.
He said that they have decided to instal additional telephone sets in the jail premises, and anyone interested to talk to one’s near and dear may do so.
