Jamshedpur : A threeday long International Conference on Science and Technology of Iron making and Steel making (STIS 2013) kicked off on Monday at CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), auditorium.
The event has been jointly organised by CSIR-NML in association with Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Jamshedpur Chapter and Tata Steel.
The objective of the conference is to share knowledge available within the country and from abroad on different
aspects of iron and steel making so as to achieve conservation of raw materials, utilization of fines and wastes,
sustenance in energy and environment in iron and steel sector.
S. Srikanth, Director, CSIR-NML said, ” Attainment of the growth target along with commitment towards cleaner environment calls for in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles of iron and steel making and their application, in one hand and identifying scope of up gradation of existing technologies on the other hand”.
T.Venugopalan, chairman, STIS 2013 and Chief Technology Officer (New Project), Tata Steel elaborated about the technical sessions to be held during 16-18 December, 2013 and papers to be presented during the delebrations.
Dr. Venugopalan said, “Altogether 150 delegates are going to participate in the deliberations in 20 technical ses-
sions and there are 30 invited speakers from all over the globe.
Guest of honour to the occasion Professor Roderick I.L Guthrie, Director, Mc Gill Metals Processing Centre,
Mc Gill University, Canada gave a brief overview and ongoing research relating to iron making and steel making.
A.M. Misra, former vice president, Tata Steel Limited mentioned about the challenges the iron and steel industry
is facing today.
Shri Misra said, “Steady supply of quality raw materials, development as well as adaptation of newer technologies,
improvement in the existing practices, reduction in energy consumption, adherence to stringent environmental regu-
lations are to name a few of the challenges”.
He added, “The 20032008 was a golden period for the Iron & Steel Industry. Today the steel industry is struggling for a better profit margin.
Unless there is a breakthrough in any front, it will be more difficult in near future. The cases in different countries vary in terms of resources, cost, production, profitability and marketing strategy”.
Dr. Sandeep Bhattacharya, Chairman, IIM, Jamshedpur Chapter briefed about the efforts of the chapter in promotion of Metals Science and Technology among the technical students.
On day one a total of thirty one papers were presented under different sessions.
