Innovation must move beyond laboratories, says Manos De
Jamshedpur, April 4: The The Institution of Engineers (India), Jamshedpur Local Centre, organised a one-day seminar on “Raw Material Synthesis to Advance Product Development and Characterization” at SNTI Auditorium. The seminar focused on additive manufacturing and 3D printing technologies, bringing together experts, students, researchers, and industry professionals.

Manos De, Office Head of Tata Consulting Engineers, attended as the Chief Guest, while Vinit Kumar Shah, Chief – Long Products at Tata Steel and Chairman of the local centre, chaired the session. The programme was anchored by Sukanya Das of JUSCO and coordinated by Krishnendu Shaw.
In his address, Vinit Kumar Shah highlighted the importance of additive manufacturing in producing complex designs with high precision and consistency. He said the technology allows the development of customised and functionally graded materials for advanced industrial use.

Chief Guest Manos De stressed the need to connect research with practical applications. He said such seminars help bridge the gap between laboratory innovation and industrial adoption, while also focusing on cost and energy efficiency in manufacturing processes. He encouraged collaboration between academia and industry to promote sustainable and innovative solutions.
The seminar featured multiple technical sessions. Dr. K. Gopala from CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory delivered a keynote lecture on the indigenous development of metal powders, highlighting the production of 22K gold powder for additive manufacturing in India. Experts from National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur and Tata Steel presented sessions on 3D printing processes, materials, and their applications in industry.
More than 70 participants from academic institutions and industries attended the seminar, including students, research scholars, and professionals from Tata Steel, Tata Tinplate, CSIR-NML, and TSUISL. The programme concluded with a valedictory session, certificate distribution, and participant feedback.
