BTTD-2026 Concludes at CSIR-NML, Showcases Young Talent in Metallurgy

Over 160 Students Participate in National-Level Seminar on Materials Engineering

Jamshedpur, June 18: The 15th edition of “Behind The Teacher’s Desk (BTTD-2026),” a three-day national-level students’ seminar on Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, concluded successfully at CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Jamshedpur.

The seminar was jointly organized by the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Jamshedpur Chapter, in association with CSIR-NML, Tata Steel Limited, and the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur. More than 160 students and experts from institutions across the country participated in the event.

A total of 101 technical papers were presented in parallel sessions covering various aspects of metallurgy and materials science. The seminar provided a platform for students to showcase research, exchange ideas, and interact with industry experts.

One of the highlights of the event was the keynote lecture by Dr. Vivek Srivastava, Vice President (R&D), Jindal Steel Ltd. Speaking on the theme, “R&D, Innovation and the Future of Indian Manufacturing: A Risk Management Perspective,” he emphasized the importance of innovation-driven growth and research in strengthening India’s manufacturing sector. The session was chaired by Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Chief Scientist and Head of the Metal Extraction and Recycling Division at CSIR-NML.

Apart from technical presentations, the seminar featured interactive sessions such as Meta Reels, Student Debate, and Student-Faculty Interaction forums, encouraging greater participation and exchange of ideas.

During the valedictory session, Dr. Atanu Ranjan Pal, Chairperson of IIM Jamshedpur Chapter, welcomed participants, while Dr. Gopi Kishore Mandal highlighted the key outcomes of the seminar. Twenty-six students received awards for Best Oral Presentation, while two students were honoured for their performance in the online Meta-Quiz competition.

The event concluded with a cultural programme and a vote of thanks by Manish Bhadu, Principal Scientist, Tata Steel and Convenor of BTTD-2026. He also announced industrial visits to Tata Steel, Tata Steel Long Products, Tata Tinplate, and CSIR-NML on June 19 to provide participants with practical industry exposure.
