Indian Sailor Killed: Iranian Underwater Drone Strikes US Tanker

New Delhi/Baghdad: An Indian crew member lost his life on Wednesday after an Iranian attack targeted the US-owned crude oil tanker, Safesea Vishnu, near Basra, Iraq. While the attack claimed one life, the Indian Embassy in Baghdad confirmed that 15 other Indian crew members were safely evacuated to a secure location.

Underwater Drone Strike in the Persian Gulf

Iran has claimed responsibility for the assault, stating it used underwater drones to target vessels in the Persian Gulf. The operation struck two specific tankers:

  • Safesea Vishnu: A Marshall Islands-flagged tanker owned by the US-based Safesea Transport Inc.

  • Zefyros: A Maltese-flagged tanker owned by a Greek firm.

The Safesea Vishnu reportedly caught fire following the strike within Iraq’s territorial waters. Iranian state broadcaster IRIB confirmed the use of sub-surface technology in the operation that “blew up” the tankers.

Embassy Response and Evacuation

The Indian Embassy in Baghdad is currently coordinating with Iraqi authorities to support the survivors. In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), the mission expressed its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased sailor.

“The Embassy of India Baghdad is in regular contact with Iraqi authorities and the rescued Indian sailors and is offering all possible assistance,” the statement read.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safe repatriation or further protection of the 15 evacuated sailors.

Escalating Regional Tensions

This fatal incident follows Iran’s recent threats to “set fire” to any vessels traversing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for 20% of the world’s oil supply. While some shipping continues, traffic has plummeted due to security risks.

The attack occurs on the 12th day of a US-Israeli military campaign against Iran. The Donald Trump administration confirmed that American forces are taking active measures to counter threats in the Strait.

Global Economic Impact

The conflict shows no signs of slowing, causing severe disruptions to international maritime trade. As fears of supply chain collapses grow, global oil prices have spiked, reflecting the volatility of the current regional crisis.
