New Delhi: The Government of India clarified on Saturday that the March 24 telephone conversation regarding the West Asia crisis occurred exclusively between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) firmly dismissed international media reports claiming that billionaire Elon Musk participated in the high-level diplomatic exchange.
MEA Sets the Record Straight
The clarification follows a New York Times report which, citing unnamed US officials, alleged that Musk joined the call—an “unusual appearance” for a private citizen during a wartime crisis.
“The telephone conversation on March 24 was between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump only,” an MEA spokesperson stated, rejecting any third-party involvement. The spokesperson reiterated that the call served as a critical platform for the two leaders to exchange views on the volatile situation in West Asia.
Focus on Global Stability and the Strait of Hormuz
The call marked the first formal interaction between Modi and Trump since hostilities involving Israel, the U.S., and Iran escalated on February 28. Following the discussion, Prime Minister Modi outlined India’s stance on social media:
-
De-escalation: India remains committed to the immediate restoration of peace.
-
Maritime Security: PM Modi emphasized that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, secure, and accessible is essential for global stability.
-
Continued Dialogue: Both leaders agreed to maintain close contact to coordinate peace efforts.
Speculation vs. Diplomacy
While reports suggested a potential reconciliation between Trump and Musk following their fallout last year, Indian officials have moved quickly to quell speculation regarding the involvement of private individuals in sensitive state matters. By reaffirming the bilateral nature of the call, the government seeks to maintain the sanctity of diplomatic protocols during heightened geopolitical tensions.
