Abu Dhabi: India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a series of critical agreements on Friday to secure fuel supplies and bolster strategic oil reserves.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi finalized the deals during a brief two-hour stopover in Abu Dhabi while traveling to the India–Nordic Summit. The high-stakes meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ) comes as West Asia faces increasing instability.
Securing the Energy Supply Chain
As the world’s second-largest importer of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), India moved to insulate its domestic market from war-related disruptions. The two leaders signed a strategic LPG supply agreement alongside a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on expanding strategic petroleum reserves.
The timing of these pacts is particularly significant for Indian consumers. Just hours before the signing, state-run oil companies hiked petrol and diesel prices by ₹3 per litre. In the national capital, petrol rose from ₹94.77 to ₹97.77 per litre, while diesel jumped from ₹87.67 to ₹90.67 per litre.

Strategic Defence and Maritime Cooperation
During delegation-level talks, the two nations signed a framework for a bilateral strategic defence partnership. Highlighting the importance of regional security, PM Modi emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz must remain “free and open” and urged all parties to respect international law.
Additionally, an agreement was signed to establish a ship repair cluster in Vadinar, Gujarat, further positioning India as a maritime hub in the Indian Ocean region.

- Maritime Infrastructure: The nations signed an MoU to develop a dedicated ship repair cluster in Vadinar, Gujarat.
The “Patriotic Duty”: Modi’s Call for Energy Conservation
Prime Minister Modi’s diplomatic push in Abu Dhabi follows his recent urgent appeals to the Indian public to curb energy consumption. Citing the economic impact of the West Asia war, the Prime Minister recently urged citizens to:
- Switch to Work-From-Home: Revert to remote work wherever possible to save fuel.
- Public Transport & Carpooling: Avoid solo commutes to maximize energy efficiency.
- Economic Restraint: Postpone foreign travel and gold purchases for one year to stabilize the national economy.
Modi framed these austerity measures as a “patriotic duty” necessary to navigate the current global turmoil.
“Shoulder-to-Shoulder”: PM Modi’s Diplomatic Stance
Addressing UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan (MBZ), PM Modi reiterated India’s commitment to the partnership. “India stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the UAE in every situation. For the restoration of peace and stability, India will extend all possible cooperation,” the Prime Minister stated. He maintained that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable paths to resolving the current global crises.
Five-Nation Tour Underway
The UAE visit marks the first leg of the Prime Minister’s five-nation tour from May 15 to 20. Following his stop in Abu Dhabi, the Prime Minister will travel to the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy to deepen ties in green technology, trade, and the defence sector.
