IMD warns of heavy rain, thunderstorms across Jharkhand

Jamshedpur: The monsoon has intensified across Jharkhand, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall over several parts of the state through Monday.

According to the IMD bulletin, isolated pockets are likely to experience intense weather, including thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph.

On Sunday, July 6, very heavy rainfall is expected in South-Western and adjoining Central Jharkhand, while South-Eastern and Northern regions may see heavy showers in isolated areas. The risk of thunderstorm and lightning activity remains high statewide.

The wet spell is forecast to continue on Monday, July 7, with heavy rainfall likely over parts of Southern and adjoining Central Jharkhand. Gusty winds and lightning are expected to accompany the downpour, potentially affecting normal life and posing risks to vulnerable infrastructure.

Meteorologists attribute the intensification to multiple weather systems converging over the region. The monsoon trough at mean sea level is active, extending from Bikaner to the northeast Bay of Bengal via Jaipur, Datia, Sidhi, Asansol, and Kolkata.

In addition, an upper air cyclonic circulation persisting over northern Gangetic West Bengal and nearby areas up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, with a noticeable southward tilt, indicates the system is deepening.

Further compounding the moisture inflow, a trough line at 3.1 km above sea level runs from the northeast Arabian Sea to northwest Bay of Bengal, crossing north Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand.
