IMD warns of heat wave in Jamshedpur, residents urged to stay cautious

Jamshedpur: With the summer sun intensifying across the state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather forecast warning of hot and humid conditions likely to affect isolated areas in the north-eastern parts of Jharkhand on April 23, followed by the possibility of a heat wave on April 25.

According to the IMD, a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius is expected across various regions of the state over the next three days, from April 22 to April 24. This temperature trend, driven by a combination of atmospheric factors, is likely to create discomfort and raise health concerns if proper precautions are not taken.

After this rise, no significant change in temperature is anticipated, suggesting that the elevated heat levels will persist, particularly in interior and northeastern districts. Cities like Jamshedpur, Dumka, Pakur, and Sahibganj could be among those most affected.

The ongoing weather trend is being partially influenced by an east-west trough extending from northwest Rajasthan to east Bangladesh. This system passes through Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh, northeast Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal, and exists at approximately 0.9 kilometers above mean sea level. Troughs like these are known to alter local wind patterns, humidity levels, and temperature variations, contributing to shifts in the regional weather.

Despite this trough, the forecast indicates that the region will experience mainly clear skies and predominantly dry weather conditions over the next several days. The absence of cloud cover and rainfall further supports the likelihood of temperature escalation and heat accumulation during daytime hours.

Authorities and health experts are urging residents, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and outdoor workers, to take precautionary measures against heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. People are advised to: Avoid going outdoors during peak afternoon hours,  Stay well-hydrated by drinking water regularly , Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, Use umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses when stepping outside  and Monitor local weather updates and heat alerts.
