IFS officers visit NML Jamshedpur, explore advanced research facilities

Jamshedpur, July 9: Two Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officers visited the CSIR–National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Jamshedpur, as part of the Mid-Career Training Programme (MCTP-II), gaining first-hand exposure to the institute’s cutting-edge research and technological capabilities in the minerals, metals and materials sector.
The visiting officers—Sushil Prasad, Deputy High Commissioner of the Embassy of India in Nairobi, and Md. Shahid Alam, Counsellor at the High Commission of India in London—were accompanied by the District Mining Officer and officials from the District Industries Centres of Jamshedpur and Chaibasa.
The delegation interacted with CSIR-NML Director Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury and Heads of Departments, who highlighted the laboratory’s research strengths, ongoing R&D initiatives and its contributions to India’s minerals, metals and materials industries.
The officers also toured several state-of-the-art facilities, including the Creep Testing Laboratory, Hot Dip Process Simulator (HDPS) Laboratory, Urban Ore Recycling Centre, and the Magnesium Metal Production and Distillation Facility. Scientists briefed the delegation on advanced technologies being developed at the institute, with a focus on industrial innovation, resource efficiency and sustainable development.
The visiting diplomats appreciated CSIR-NML’s world-class research infrastructure and its significant role in driving technological advancement and supporting the country’s industrial growth. The visit concluded with an engaging exchange of ideas, reinforcing the importance of scientific innovation in promoting India’s technological and economic interests globally.
