IDEM spinal tumor operated at Brahmananda Narayana Multispeciality Hospital Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur, July 26: Bharat Lohar, 19 years male, resident of Chota Gamharia, Bhojpur colony, Near KPS, Gamharia was admitted with complaints of inability to move lower limbs.

Patient was completely bed ridden & was unable to sit; stand & walk. MRI spine was done which showed spinal tumor which was IDEM (Intradural extra medullary) at level of D12 to L2. Surgery was planned & executed. IDEM tumor was removed by Dr. Rajiv Maharshi( Neuro & Spine Surgeon) & team of Doctors Dr. Umesh Prasad (HOD, Anesthesia), Dr. Ramanuj Lal (Anesthesia specialist).

The spinal tumor was large extending from D12 vertebrae to L2 vertebrae & was 6cm x 3cm in size. The removed tumor was sent for histopathological examination. Patient was discharged four days after the surgery in stable condition. In post operative visit, power of the lower limbs has improved and patient was able to move his lower limbs. Dr. Maharshi advised the patient will be able to walk with continued physiotherapy in due course of Time.

Spinal tumors are commonly three types � Intramedullary, Intradural extramedullary & Extradural. Out of which IDEM are completely curable entry.�

The common symptoms of spinal tumors are: Weakness of limbs followed by complete paralysis, Tingling & Numbness, Burning Pain, Inability to pass urine & stool & sexual dysfunction. The symptoms depend upon the loca_on & size of the tumor. It can occur anywhere from cervical to lumbosaccral spine. Surgical excision is the treatment of spinal tumor which can be done conventionally or endoscopic ally.

Dr. Maharshi quoted that �This type of tumors are located inside the dura & compress the spinal cord causing neurological deficit. Most common IDEM is Myxopapillary ependymomas, Meningioma Schwanomas which if removed early will reverse the neurological deficit. Hence IDEM spinal tumors are completely curable.
