Jamshedpur, July 7: In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Sidhgora police arrested a history-sheeter with 275 packets of brown sugar during a late-night raid near Litti Chowk in the Sidhgora police station area.
The arrested accused has been identified as Mohd. Shahid (32), a resident of Muslim Basti, Carriage Colony under Burmamines. Police seized 51.81 grams of brown sugar, estimated to be worth around Rs 1.37 lakh, along with a mobile phone from his possession.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, the Officer-in-Charge of Sidhgora police station said a special anti-narcotics operation was conducted on Monday night after police received information about suspicious activities in the area.
During the raid, several suspects were spotted gathered near Litti Chowk. As the police team moved in, Mohd. Shahid was apprehended while others managed to escape under the cover of darkness.
During interrogation, Shahid reportedly confessed that he used to procure brown sugar from Kharagpur and sold it in and around Jamshedpur with the help of a female associate from Burmamines. The duo allegedly distributed the narcotics by moving from place to place, targeting different localities.
Police said the accused has a criminal history and is known to law enforcement agencies. Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the absconding suspects, including the female accomplice, and to dismantle the wider drug supply network linked to the case.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and the accused has been remanded to judicial custody. Police reiterated their commitment to intensifying anti-drug operations and taking stringent action against those involved in the illegal narcotics trade.
