Jamshedpur: For the first time since India gained independence, a sitting Prime Minister will set foot at Tatanagar Railway Station in Jharkhand, a station that has long been considered the lifeline of the nation.
On September 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the iconic station, where he will flag off the Tata-Patna Vande Bharat Express, among other trains. This momentous occasion marks a significant chapter in the history of Tatanagar, a station with deep roots in the industrial and cultural growth of India.
Tatanagar Railway Station, formerly known as Kalimati, has never seen the presence of a Prime Minister in its long history. The visit by PM Modi will be a first, turning the spotlight on a station that has played a crucial role in the nation’s development.
Since its establishment in 1891, the station has not only connected India’s industrial heartland but also served as a vital link between the east and west of the country.
Tatanagar railway station was established in 1891. In 1919, the then Governor-General and Viceroy of India, Lord Chelmsford, renamed the station ‘Tatanagar’ and the nearby town from ‘Sakchi’ to ‘Jamshedpur,’ in honor of the visionary industrialist Jamshedji Tata, founder of Tata Steel.
The station’s importance was once again highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic, when it became a key transit point for life-saving oxygen supplies. From Tatanagar, lakhs of tons of oxygen were dispatched to different corners of the country, playing a critical role in supporting India’s healthcare system during the national crisis.
As Tatanagar gears up to welcome its first Prime Minister, the station, adorned and fortified, stands as a reminder of its resilience, historical significance, and vital role in shaping India’s growth.
