Herd of elephants on rampage near Jamshedpur, damage houses in Chandil

Jamshedpur, May 5: A herd of wild elephants went on a rampage in the village under Chandil block in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district, causing damage to homes, crops, and infrastructure. The incident occurred early in the wee hours, when the elephants entered the village in search of food and water.

According to eyewitnesses, the elephants were visibly agitated and charged at anything in their path, causing widespread panic among villagers. The elephants first targeted farmland, damaging crops and irrigation systems. They then moved on to residential areas, causing damage to homes and property.

“ The herd which consists of about two dozen elephants attacked Kurla village and was on a rampage till early this morning during which the tuskers damaged six thatched houses and destroyed paddy stocks as well as standing crops,” informed a forest official.

In the face of such a big number of elephants in the village, the villagers were left with no option but to flee their homes and bunched up at a safe place in fear.

As the villagers were not prepared for such a sudden attack by the wild elephants, they kept on watching their houses being pulled down and property damaged in the moonlit night. The hapless villagers returned to their razed houses after the herd of wild elephants left the village.

Local authorities and forest officials were immediately informed and rushed to the scene to assess the situation. A team of experts was deployed to monitor the elephants’ movements and try to guide them back into the forest.

The incident highlights the ongoing issue of human-elephant conflict in the region, with encroachment on forest land and loss of habitat forcing elephants to venture into human settlements in search of food and water. Authorities have called for greater awareness and conservation efforts to protect both human and elephant populations in the region.

As of the latest update, the elephants have been successfully guided back into the forest, and authorities are assessing the extent of the damage caused by the rampage.

The aggrieved villagers on Friday morning went over to the Chandil range office and demanded the forest deputy to drive away the herd of wild elephants from an adjoining forest patch where it has taken shelter.

The villagers have also demanded the forest department officials to provide them with things like crackers, drums and torches so that they may be able to drive the menacing elephants away from the village if the herd comes there once again.

The authorities have promised to provide compensation to affected villagers and to take steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Overall, the rampage of the wild elephant herd has been a traumatic experience for the residents, highlighting the need for greater awareness and action to address the issue of human-wildlife conflict in the region.
