Jamshedpur, March 9: A herd of a dozen wild elephants crossed the rail tracks and was spotted In the forests of Jamua Panchayat area under Chakulia block on Monday. The herd was spotted in the Sal forest in Machadiha on Wednesday setting panic among the villagers in and around Jamua. Jamua villagers had been affected on earlier occasions by wild pachyderm herds as their crops and houses were destroyed by the animals. It may be mentioned that in the course of the last six months two villagers were trampled to death by the wild animals, crops and houses were destroyed. Villages in Jamua Panchayat are prone to elephant attacks and obviously, the villagers, after sighting of the herd of 12 elephants are distraught.
Panchayat head Prabhas Chandra Hansda reflecting the fear factor among villagers, said, “The appearance of this herd of a dozen elephants in our vicinity is a cause of high concern and villagers are scared. Our Panchayat is surrounded by dense forest areas and villagers are worried abou5t the losses these animals have caused earlier.”
