Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in Jamshedpur, IMD issues alert

Jamshedpur: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh set of warnings for Jharkhand, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple districts over the coming days. The weather advisory is particularly focused on the southeastern and northeastern regions, where intensified monsoon activity is expected.

According to IMD, the upcoming spell is being driven by a combination of a well-marked monsoon trough and a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, which is likely to impact weather patterns across eastern India, including Jharkhand.

Rainfall forecast at a glance: July 24: Isolated places in southeastern Jharkhand may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds ranging between 30–40 km/h. Eastern districts are also likely to witness significant rainfall during this period. July 25: The state is expected to experience widespread rainfall activity, with southeastern and northeastern districts bearing the brunt. Other parts of Jharkhand, barring the northwestern region, will see moderate to heavy showers. July 26–27: The wet spell is likely to continue into the weekend, with heavy rainfall predicted at isolated locations across the entire state.

The monsoon trough is currently aligned from Jammu to the northeast Bay of Bengal via Ranchi and Digha, aiding in the continuous moisture inflow into the region. An upper air cyclonic circulation hovering over south Odisha and neighbouring areas, extending up to 5.8 km above sea level and tilting southeastward with height, is playing a crucial role in influencing rainfall. A fresh low-pressure system is expected to form over the north Bay of Bengal around July 24, which could lead to further intensification of rainfall across Jharkhand and adjoining states.

While monsoon activity remained relatively subdued in the past 24 hours, light to moderate rainfall was reported at several locations. However, isolated pockets witnessed heavy rainfall, with Bishnupur in Gumla district recording the highest at 144.5 mm.
