Heavy Rain unlikely in Jharkhand in next 72 hours

Jamshedpur, Aug 11: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by gusty winds with a maximum speed of 30–40 kmph at isolated places across Jharkhand till Thursday, August 14. However, weathermen have ruled out the possibility of heavy rainfall over the state in the next 72 hours.

According to IMD’s Ranchi Meteorological Centre, the monsoon trough at mean sea level currently extends from Faridkot, Ludhiana, Najibabad, Shahjahanpur, Balia, and Jalpaiguri, moving east-north eastwards towards Arunachal Pradesh.

An upper air cyclonic circulation persists over the central parts of Uttar Pradesh, extending up to 4.5 km above mean sea level and tilting southwards with height. Additionally, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal around August 13, which may further enhance rainfall activity in the eastern region after Thursday.

Meteorologists said that as of now, Jharkhand is experiencing a significant rainfall surplus. Against the normal seasonal rainfall of 607 mm, the state has so far received 854 mm, which translates to a 41 per cent surplus.

Officials advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorms and lightning conditions, especially in rural and open areas, and avoid unnecessary exposure to the outdoors during such weather events.
