Heavy rain causes chaos in Jamshedpur’s Bagbera and Jugsalai areas

Jamshedpur, June 2: The aftermath of a severe storm and heavy rainfall on Sunday evening wreaked havoc in Bagbera and Jugsalai areas, leaving residents distressed and infrastructure damaged.

In Bagbera’s lower settlements, including Naya Basti, Babakuti, Sidho-Kanhu Basti, and Golgappa Basti, approximately 100 houses were inundated as drain water surged following the downpour. Fearing further inundation, residents were compelled to evacuate their homes, seeking refuge in safer locations with their belongings.

The perennial flooding issue in Bagbera is exacerbated by encroachment near River View Society, which has reduced the drain’s width, diverting rainwater into settlements instead of flowing into the river. Despite local appeals for action against encroachment, the Circle Officer’s office delayed addressing the matter, leaving residents vulnerable to flooding during the rainy season.

District Council member Dr. Kavita Parmar promptly responded to the situation, visiting Naya Basti to assess the damage first-hand. She advocated for the immediate cleaning of sluice gates, essential for mitigating flooding risks. Additionally, Parmar liaised with the Electricity Department to address damage caused by fallen trees and electricity poles, ensuring swift repairs to restore power and safety to affected households.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall inundated the Jugsalai under bridge near Tata Pigment Gate, transforming it into a temporary pond. Stranded buses, tempos, two-wheelers, and pedestrians struggled to navigate through the deluge, leading to significant traffic congestion. Despite being a crucial thoroughfare connecting Tatanagar station to Bistupur, Sonari, Sakchi, and Adityapur, the under bridge perennially grapples with flooding issues, highlighting the urgent need for a permanent solution to alleviate commuter woes.
