Heavy rain alert in Jamshedpur: Widespread showers across Jharkhand till July 5

Jamshedpur: A spell of significant rainfall is set to sweep across large parts of Jharkhand over the next few days, as meteorological conditions continue to intensify over the region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area has developed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh, gradually shifting inland and influencing weather patterns across eastern India.

Officials reported that the system currently lies over coastal Gangetic West Bengal and its surrounding areas. The associated cyclonic circulation, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, is forecast to move slowly in a west-northwestward direction over the next 48 hours. This movement is expected to impact North Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, and Jharkhand, triggering periods of heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity.

Adding to the dynamic weather scenario, the monsoon trough at mean sea level is presently stretching from Sri Ganganagar in Rajasthan across Delhi, Fatehgarh, Sidhi, and Jamshedpur, before converging with the low-pressure centre near the Bay of Bengal. The IMD has noted that this alignment is reinforcing moisture inflow and further enhancing rainfall potential across the region.

Meteorologists also highlighted the presence of an east-west trough extending from southwest Uttar Pradesh to the cyclonic circulation over coastal West Bengal. This trough, active at altitudes between 0.9 and 3.1 km above sea level, crosses southeast Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Gangetic West Bengal and is likely to remain an additional trigger for heavy showers and stormy weather in the coming days.

Detailed Rainfall Forecast: 2 July: Isolated heavy rainfall is expected particularly over north-central Jharkhand. Thunderstorms and lightning may occur across many districts. 3 July: Widespread heavy showers are forecast to continue in north-central and adjoining regions of the state, accompanied by thunderstorm activity. 4 July: Rainfall is likely to intensify further, impacting north-central and eastern districts, with fresh warnings for lightning and gusty winds. 5 July: Heavy rain is anticipated at isolated locations over northeastern Jharkhand, potentially leading to localized flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Authorities have urged residents to remain alert, especially those living near rivers, streams, and flood-prone zones. The district administrations have been advised to activate control rooms, deploy emergency response teams, and monitor vulnerable infrastructure such as culverts, embankments, and power lines.

People are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to secure household items that could be damaged by strong winds or water accumulation. Farmers are also encouraged to take necessary precautions to protect standing crops and livestock from excessive moisture and lightning hazards.
