IMD records heat dip across Jharkhand
Jamshedpur, April 29: Jamshedpur witnessed a sudden change in weather on Wednesday evening as rain, strong winds, and hailstorm brought much-needed relief from the intense heat. Shortly after noon, dark clouds covered the sky, followed by gusty winds carrying dust and then rainfall across the city.
In several areas, large hailstones were reported, creating panic among residents. People in markets and on roads rushed to find shelter to protect themselves and their vehicles. The sudden weather shift led to a noticeable drop in temperature, providing relief after days of scorching conditions.

However, the storm also caused disruption in many parts of the city. Strong winds led to tree branches breaking and falling on roads, affecting traffic movement on key routes for some time.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the change in weather is due to the effect of a western disturbance. Officials have warned that similar conditions may continue over the next 24 hours.

The local administration has advised residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel during bad weather. People have also been asked to take precautions, especially during strong winds and lightning, to ensure safety.

As per the daily evening bulletin issued by the Meteorological Centre in Ranchi, the maximum temperature in Jamshedpur settled at 37.5°C, marking a drop of 1.9°C from normal and a sharp fall of 4.2°C in the last 24 hours. The minimum temperature was recorded at 26.4°C, slightly above normal by 1.9°C.
The cooling effect followed localized rainfall, with Jamshedpur receiving 2 mm of precipitation between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Similar rainfall was recorded in Ranchi, while Bokaro saw 32.4 mm, indicating more intense activity in pockets.
Across Jharkhand, Daltonganj emerged as the hottest location at 42.7°C, continuing to reel under heatwave-like conditions. In contrast, Khunti recorded the highest rainfall at 34.5 mm, reflecting uneven spatial distribution of showers.
Automated Weather Station (AWS) data showed:
* Bokaro: 37.7°C (−1.5°C departure), 2.5 mm rain
* Baharagora (East Singhbhum): 35.8°C (−0.7°C), no rain
* Seraikela: 41.2°C (−0.6°C), dry conditions
* Khunti: 37.2°C (−1.8°C), 34.5 mm rain
The IMD indicated that thunderstorm activity, gusty winds, and isolated hail events have contributed to the temporary relief.
However, heat conditions persist in western parts of the state, suggesting a continued contrast in weather patterns.
For residents of Jamshedpur and nearby regions, Wednesday’s sudden hailstorm and showers provided a welcome, if brief, break from the sweltering conditions that had gripped the region over the past several days.
