Jamshedpur: Moving beyond traditional disciplinary methods, Gulmohur High School recently hosted an intensive workshop for 85 educators on “Classroom Discipline and Positive Behaviour Management.”
Led by Principal Ms. Priti Sinha, the session integrated advanced mental health frameworks derived from her recent training with delegates from NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences).
The 4-Layered Behavior Management Model
The school has pioneered a structured, preventive system that prioritizes psychological safety over punitive action:
- Mandatory Life Skills (Nursery–XII): Emotional regulation and empathy are now part of the core curriculum.
- Happiness Checklist System: A graded reflective tool for students, parents, and teachers to monitor well-being.
- Behaviour Modification Framework: Uses “Reflection & Improvement Forms” to guide students through corrective action rather than shaming.
- Counselling Referral Mechanism: A formal bridge to specialized support from psycho-social ambassadors and professional counselors.
Shifting Classroom Dynamics
Ms. Sinha emphasized that post-pandemic classroom challenges—such as rising anxiety and impulsivity—require neuroscience-informed responses.
Key Strategies for Teachers:
- Restorative Conversations: Replacing public reprimands with private, constructive dialogue.
- Emotional Regulation: Explicitly teaching students how to manage their reactions.
- Calm Modeling: Maintaining adult composure to de-escalate power struggles.
The workshop concluded with a shared institutional commitment: to ensure that every classroom at Gulmohur High School remains an emotionally safe space where dignity is never compromised for the sake of obedience.
