Glutathione Injections: Beauty Miracle or Silent Danger?

Jamshedpur: In the growing pursuit of fair and flawless skin, an increasing number of people are turning to glutathione injections often without understanding the risks involved. Much like the fitness trend that popularized protein supplements, glutathione is now being promoted as a “beauty booster” to lighten skin tone. However, health experts are raising serious concerns.

Glutathione injections, widely used in Bollywood and by social media influencers to maintain a youthful and radiant appearance, are now being sold casually at homes, beauty parlors, and even chemist shops often without a prescription or medical supervision.

While glutathione is available in various forms such as tablets, capsules, creams, and lotions, its misuse, especially via injections, can be dangerous. Tablet and capsule forms are common but can strain the liver if used long-term. Injections, though popular for quick results, must only be administered under a doctor’s supervision.

What Does the Research Say?

A 2012 study published in the Korean Journal of Medical Science observed skin lightening in users, though the effects were temporary. Similarly, a 2017 study in the International Journal of Dermatology involving 30 participants reported minor improvement in skin tone with glutathione tablets. However, side effects such as stomach pain and skin rashes were also noted.

Why Awareness Is Critical

Experts emphasize the urgent need for awareness campaigns to educate the public on the correct and safe usage of glutathione. Dermatologists recommend that people avoid self-medication and stay away from unauthorized practitioners or beauty parlors offering injections. Frequent and rigorous research is also needed to better understand the long-term effects of glutathione-based treatments.

Natural Sources of Glutathione

Instead of relying on synthetic products, individuals can boost their glutathione levels naturally by including foods such as walnuts, avocados, oranges, strawberries, and kiwis in their diet. Green vegetables like spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, and garlic are also excellent sources.

Possible Side Effects of Glutathione Injections:

  1. Red patches on the skin, skin thinning or melting, thyroid dysfunction, kidney damage or failure, intense stomach pain, blood disorders, premature graying of hair, white patches on skin, stomach ulcers and risk of skin cancer.

In conclusion, while glutathione may offer temporary cosmetic benefits, its misuse can lead to severe and potentially irreversible health issues. Medical consultation is a must before beginning any form of glutathione treatment.
