Ghaziabad (IANS): Police shot dead the absconding main accused in the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Surya Pratap Chauhan late Saturday night during an encounter in the Khoda police station area, officials said on Sunday.
During a joint operation, the Khoda and Indirapuram police returned fire and injured Asad, a criminal carrying a Rs 50,000 bounty. Police rushed him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. A police officer also sustained a gunshot wound during the exchange and is currently undergoing treatment.
Speaking about the operation, Deputy Commissioner of Police (City/Trans-Hindon) Dhaval Jaiswal said, “On May 28, Asad and his accomplices attacked Surya Pratap Chauhan with a knife in the Khoda area. The critically injured Surya succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a hospital.”
The murder triggered tension and outrage across the region. Locals and various Hindu organizations staged protests demanding that the police immediately arrest the accused.
“We named five individuals as accused in this case. Immediately after the incident, police arrested three of them, while the main accused, Asad, evaded capture. We formed several police teams to apprehend him and announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for his arrest,” DCP Jaiswal said.
He further mentioned that police received intelligence that Asad was preparing to flee the area after collecting money from some associates.
“Acting on this information, police set up barricades at multiple locations and launched an intensive checking drive. During this operation, officers spotted Asad approaching on a motorcycle with an accomplice,” DCP Jaiswal said.
“When police attempted to intercept him, he opened fire on the team. The police returned fire, critically wounding Asad. We transported him to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead,” he added.
Officials mentioned that Asad’s accomplice used the chaos to flee the scene; however, police have launched an operation to apprehend the absconding suspect.
